contemporary prayers for today

prayer poems

Featured on this page are five prayer poems suitable for different occasions and events. The first prayer is a rhyming poem asking for God's healing and protection, followed by an inspiring Easter poem about the resurrection of Christ, entitled "Love Overcame". There is also an excerpt from the popular "Serenity Prayer", and a prayer suitable for writing on a card and giving to a friend or special person in your life. Finally there is a creative morning prayer, which may be used for personal devotion or for a service or prayer breakfast.

Short prayer poem for healing

I come to shelter close to you, please cover me today.
I need to feel your loving arms, to ease the cry of pain.
I wait upon your words O Lord, and trust in all you say.
I rest upon your promises, to hold and keep me safe.
I ask for light within the dark, safe and warm and bright.
I look to you to help me rest, especially tonight.
I wade in deep within your grace, and wait in waters clear.
I trust I'll find your heavenly touch, and always feel you near.

Morning Prayer Poem

a short creative film (2.30 minute) asking for the joy, love and hope of God to fill the day ahead. The words to this prayer are reproduced further down this page:-

"Love overcame
Emerging from a cold tomb"

Love Overcame

Love overcame
Emerging from a cold tomb
All the truth, majesty and creativity of a living God
Transforming a broken heart
Making a quiet return, in a still and sorrowful garden
The grave stone rolled away, to release redemptive love
Jesus resurrected and restored
Comforts a weeping woman
Speaks with travellers on a journey
Meets with his faithful friends
And they bow down before Christ alive
And acknowledged that the saviour has arrived
That the word of God has come alive
And that the extraordinary transformation of heaven and earth
Is complete

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change;
Courage to change the things I can;
And wisdom to know the difference.

The serenity prayer is attributed to Reinhold Neibuhr (1892-1971) an American theologian and writer. Read the full version of this prayer here.

Do you know I love you?
a prayer poem for a friend

Do you know I love you,
And hold our friendship dear?
I care for all you care for
And long to dry your tears.

My heart yearns for your happiness
I hope for you to shine.
So I try hard to make you smile
Each time our lives entwine.

If I could take away your cares
I'd lock them all away,
And give you all your heart desires
In presents new each day.

And yet I can not always be
The answer to your prayers.
So each day I trust you to
A Father I know cares.

And faithfully I promise I
Will always ask for you,
I life of love and fun and dreams.
Do you know that I love you?

Early morning prayer

I come before you O Lord
As the sun rises may your hope rise up in me.
As the birds sing may your love flow out of me.
As the light floods into this new day,
May your joy shine through me.
I come before you, O Lord
And drink in this moment of peace,
That I may carry something of your hope, love and joy
Today in my heart.
