The kind of peace that Christ offers us is not of this world. We delude ourselves if we believe that worldly treasures - material accusations, power, fame and wealth - will bring peace to our hearts. There is saying in the city of London that goes something like this: "When have I earnt enough? When I've earnt a bit more."
Christ invites us to rest in Him. We can be assured that he will provide for us, sustain us and keep us as we trust in him.
This page has three prayers asking God for inner peace, one which reminds us that God is our source of strength, and another which likens the presence of God to a gentle flame burning within us. The last prayer is the famous "Serenity Prayer" - you may wish to meditate on these words as you seek God for inner calm and emotional strength in your life.
O Father,
Your life in me brings stillness to my turmoil.
Your life in me brings clarity to my confusion.
Your life in me brings wisdom to my worry.
Your life in me brings contentment to my striving.
You life in me brings gentleness to my anger.
Your life in me brings patience to my panic.
Your life in me brings hope to my suffering.
Your life in me brings faith to my frustration.
Your life in me brings such heavenly treasure into my heart
And enables me to navigate a peaceful path.
In you I find strength for my journey.
Prayer for Peace and Comfort
a prayer for receiving the peace of God into your heart and life:
Dear Lord,
Your love in me is like a flame that burns within my heart,
Giving light to all I do and everything that I am.
Sometimes it dances in my soul as I praise your name.
At times it dims or flickers low when hard times come my way.
Even in the darkest hours I sense your light afresh,
Reminding me to trust in you.
Be still and wait and rest my soul!
For every flame needs gentle fuel.
Your love is the key,
For keeping this little candle burning alight in me.
