surrender prayer

Dramatic sunset over a tranquil sea

What does God want of us? Simply this - to love him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. This is the way of God's Kingdom. For it is in letting go, and letting God, that we find the real treasures in life - the kind of treasures that can never be bought or sold:-
"Love cannot be drowned by oceans or floods; it cannot be bought, no matter what is offered."

(Song of Solomon 8:7, CEV)

This page features three inspiring prayers of surrender to God. The first prayer is an example of total and complete surrender. The next prayer (“Disturb Us Lord”) can be used as an offering of oneself to the Lord, inviting him to lead us into '"wider seas" for his glory and praise. The final prayer (“Prayer of St Richard”) can be used in the morning to surrender each day to our living God.

Prayer of complete surrender to God

O God,

I lay my life at your feet,
And offer you all that I am.

May my feet follow your leading.
May my mind be renewed with your truth.
May my heart be full of your grace.
May my words be full of your wisdom.
May my mind be full of your truth.
May my dreams be full of your vision,
And my soul fill of your peace.

I lay my life at your feet
And offer you all that I am.

Amen.

Disturb us Lord

a prayer attributed to Sir Francis Drake, Elizabethan politician and maritime explorer. This film is an inspiring contemporary dance interpretation of this famous prayer:-

Disturb Us Lord

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

attributed to Sir Francis Drake (c.1540 - 1596)

The Prayer of St. Richard

a beautiful daily prayer to God

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits which you have given us,
for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.
Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,
may we know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly,
day by day.
Amen.

St Richard of Chichester (1197 – 1253) is the patron Saint of Sussex, England.

useful bible quote for these prayers

"Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat; I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self."

(Matthew 16:24-25, The Message)
